Step to Step Polishing of Epoxy Resin.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Make sure that the epoxy glue has fully dried and then polish it. The curing time takes 24-72 hours based on the brand and the weather conditions. An already cured resin will be difficult to feel and not sticky.

In cases where the surface is bumpy or has marks which are visible, then you have to scrap the surface with utility knife or razor blade and then sand.

Step 2: Wet Sanding to a Smooth Finish.

The best is sanding in order to achieve a perfect polish. The optimal outcomes are obtained when performed in the following steps:

  • Start with 400-Grit Sandpaper: Wet the surface using water. Spinning movements to maintain the sand sandy. The surface is supposed to be sanded and then rinsed with clean water.
  • Move to 800-Grit Sandpaper: Again sand the procedure keeping it well covered. The surface should be wet so that dust and overheating can be minimised.
  • Continue with 1000, 1500, 2000 and 3000-grit sandpaper: Each grit is further refined and smoothed over the surface. Clean the table with changing grits.

After this process is complete, the resin has to feel silky and should not have any scratches.

Step 3: Application of Polishing Compound.

Sanding follows and this is followed by the application of polishing compound to give shine.

  • Choose a nice Polishing Compound: Take a little resin upon the surface.
  • Buff the Surface: Smear the compound with a microfibre cloth or buffing pad to flatten the compound. In case it is necessary to use a polisher with electric current, then put the polisher on a low speed and polish in rotary movements.
  • Repeat if Necessary: In case the surface is not glossy enough, it is required to apply the second coating, and again polish it.

Step 4: Finalizing with High-Gloss Finish.

The final finish will be required using a clean microfibre cloth to achieve the required glass-like lustre. Continue buffing till the surface becomes a smooth mirror. When the occasion needs, it is advisable to have a layer of thinly applied wax or a protective coating to enhance the shine and also maintain it.

Step 5: Cleaning and Protection.

  • Wipe the Surface: wipe it using a piece of lint-free cloth.
  • Finish Coating: This can be achieved by applying some clear resin coating/wax to preserve the shiny appearance.
  • Should not be left in Direct Sunlight: as a result of the long term exposure to the UV rays, the epoxy resin can turn yellow.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Lack of Sanding Steps: One can rush through the sandpaper grits leaving visible scratches.
  • With Dry Sandpaper: This is so that it does not overheat, and sand is always wet.
  • Exerting too much Pressure: The sandpaper and polishing pads can do it.
  • Omission of Between Steps Cleaning: The residual of one step could influence the overall performance of polishing.

Washing an Epoxy Resin Surface (Glossy).

  • On a regular basis: Wipe using a damp cloth and dilute soap.
  • Strong Chemicals not to use: Grassy Cleaners can be washed with time to lose its shine.
